Hot Toddy Recipes – A Natural Cold Remedy

It is happening. I am experiencing my first mom cold, y’all.

Before having a baby, treating a cold  typically consisted of ingesting loads of cold medicine, eating my weight in Panera chicken and wild rice soup, and binge watching Greys Anatomy. It was basically a groggy vacation!  Now, in-between blowing my own nose, I am sucking the snot out of Audrey’s congested little nose with the terrifying (yet highly effective) nose freda. I have watched nearly every episode of Bubble Guppies twice, and I’m drinking loads of coffee (even more than usual) because cold medicine now makes me too loopy to function.

And yes, while the luxury of taking it easy and relaxing while sick is a thing of the past, I would not change a single thing! Besides, us mommas have super powers! There is no way a little cold is going to get in the way of taking care of business. 😉

Besides, I have discovered the most amazing natural cold remedy to have after putting the little one to bed. (Key words.. read them aloud – after. bed. This common cold reliever will make you sleepy, so I wouldn’t recommend it for daytime!)

Behold, the Hot Toddy. Actually, two Hot Toddys.. both made with ginger tea!

This hot alcoholic beverage works wonders. The whisky (or bourbon) clears your nasal passages and gently brings you into a nice sleepy state. The honey soothes a sore throat and has antibacterial properties, and the ginger tea helps with any nausea or bloating. Having one before bed gives you the same benefits of taking night-time cold medicine without that foggy/groggy feeling medicine can leave you with in the morning. Of course, moderation is key. More than one of these may worsen your symptoms instead of aiding them.

When I first felt my cold coming on, I looked up the classic recipe. It called for water, whisky, lemon and honey. Too easy! I threw one together (although I didn’t have lemon on hand), and was surprised by how good it was. Since then, I have researched it further and changed the recipe up a little.

Apple Ginger Hot Toddy

You will need:

  • ginger tea
  • 8 oz (1 cup) hot water
  • 1.5 (1 shot) apple whisky – I like Crown Royal Apple
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 lemon slice

Brew ginger tea to the desired strength using very hot water. Pour in a shot of apple whisky, and then stir in 1 tsp of honey. Stir. Add lemon slice.

Maple Ginger Hot Toddy

You will need:

  • ginger tea
  • 8 oz (1 cup) hot water
  • 1.5 (1 shot) whisky (or bourbon)
  • 2 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 lemon slice

Brew ginger tea to the desired strength using very hot water. Pour in the whisky (or bourbon), and then stir in 2 tsp of maple syrup. Stir. Add lemon slice.

Drink your hot toddy and figure out what the heck thisssss means! 😉
