My days of baking in the sun (or a tanning bed… yikes!) are over, y’all. I just can’t justify it any longer. There’s no doubt that a true tan lasts longer and is more beautiful than any artificial tan, but the lasting damage to your skin from the sun’s rays is frightening. I have had one too many moles biopsied, and I am only 28!
Thankfully, I have this whole self-tanning thing down to a science. These are my tried and true self tanners. They give the MOST natural looking-bronzed tan achievable without the sun’s harmful rays.
For an all over tan – Great for Events/Last-minute tanning
Scenario– Its Friday, and you have a wedding to attend on Saturday. You’re pasty AF, and there’s no time for a gradual self tanner. You need the real deal.
This stuff is my HOLY GRAIL tanning lotion. It’s ideal for the last-minute tan because it comes with a color guide (that you wash off after you allow the tan to develop). This means that the product is actually tinted so you can tell where you have applied it. After one application, you will be able to tell a huge difference. You can also apply it a couple days in a row to really deepen the tan. It’s an olive-brown based solution… meaning that you will not run the risk of turning orange.
My tip with this product –
MAKE SURE YOU SHOWER IT OFF BEFORE YOU SWEAT. If you use this product and then plan on hitting up the gym later on in the day… you are running the risk of sweating green due to the color guide. It’s legit Hulk-like… and not in a good Im-crushing-my-workout kind of way. How do I know this? Take a guess. 😉 Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to let the product develop and then shower. THEN, go to your event or the gym or wherever. Don’t say I didn’t tell ya!
Also, make sure to use a tanning mitt like the St. Tropez Applicator Mitt. Even if you use the spray tan that Tanwise makes, make sure to rub it in (after spraying) with the mitt.
If you use their spray tan product vs the lotions/mousse, make sure to do it in a well ventilated area and stand on top of a towel that you don’t care about.
Apply it during the late day/evening in natural light if possible. This will allow you to see the color guide. Wear loose clothing as it dries/processes and do not rise it off until the morning.
Best Gradual Tan
Jergens in the color medium to tan. This stuff has come a long way over the years. When I first started using it several years ago, it had the worst cornflake-y smell to it. I am not saying it smells 100% amazing now..but it’s so much better than it was. I have never had a mishap with this stuff. After several days of applying, it truly does give you a beautiful glow. I also love that they have a face self tan that contains SPF!
It is best used during the months where you want a consistent tan. Over winter/fall I typically give my skin a break and only self tan for events using Tanwise OR the next product I want to touch base on…
Best Facial/Neck/Chest Tanner
I love to use this spray tan during the cooler months when only my face/neck are exposed. It does not have a guide, so you can wear your makeup over it while it develops (but give it time to dry!). That is a huge plus to me!
The reason that I don’t recommend this for whole-body self tanning is because it doesn’t have a guide. I have experienced HUGE mishaps with this stuff when trying to use it all over. However, when I use it on just my face/neck.. it is a quick and easy application that yields a gorgeous glow!
